They may appear delicate, mere strokes of color in the air. Yet their role as pollinators is profound and essential to ecosystems worldwide.
Have you ever paused on a warm afternoon to watch a butterfly land on a bloom and wondered how something so seemingly fragile could bear such responsibility?
Although bees often dominate discussions of pollination, butterflies deserve a spotlight of their own. They visit an array of wildflowers, preferring bright reds, oranges and yellows, and landing platforms that match their long, slender legs and proboscises (fs.usda.gov).
Their visual abilities are well tuned and their preferences shaped by evolution. Many butterfly pollinated flowers have evolved deep nectar tubes and showy colors to attract these winged visitors.
