The fight against climate change is driving a surge in demand for renewable energy technologies, but this so-called green transition is exposing a harsh reality—our reliance on destructive resource extraction. The recent closure of the Cobre Panamá copper mine in Panama, one of the world’s largest, highlights the contradictions in our push for sustainability. While activists and environmentalists celebrate the mine’s shutdown due to ecological concerns, its closure also disrupts the supply of copper—an essential material for electric vehicles, wind turbines, and solar panels. This paradox raises a critical question: How do we balance the need for raw materials with the imperative to protect ecosystems?
At first glance, closing a massive mining operation like Cobre Panamá seems like a victory for conservation. After all, large-scale mining projects are notorious for deforestation, water contamination, and the displacement of local communities. In this case, the mine’s impact on forests, water sources, and indigenous groups fueled widespread protests, leading to its eventual shutdown.
But while shutting down a mine may prevent immediate environmental harm in one location, it does not eliminate the demand for copper and other metals. Instead, the pressure shifts elsewhere, often to regions where regulations are weaker and environmental oversight is minimal. In essence, the world’s hunger for renewable energy materials simply pushes resource extraction into new territories, perpetuating a cycle of destruction under the banner of sustainability.
The renewable energy industry is built on the promise of reducing carbon emissions and mitigating climate change. Yet, the very infrastructure required to achieve this transition—solar panels, wind turbines, and electric vehicles—relies heavily on materials extracted through processes that damage the environment. This contradiction forces us to ask whether our definition of "clean energy" is truly as clean as we claim.
A single wind turbine can require up to four tons of copper, while an electric vehicle battery depends on lithium, nickel, and cobalt, each of which has its own environmental and human rights concerns. The irony is that while we aim to replace fossil fuels, we are still locked into an extractive economy that prioritizes resource consumption over sustainability.
The Global South, particularly countries in Latin America and Africa, bears the brunt of this resource extraction. While developed nations champion their transition to green energy, they outsource the environmental costs to regions that lack the power to resist exploitation. Wealthy economies reap the benefits of electric mobility and carbon-free electricity, while mining communities suffer deforestation, pollution, and loss of traditional livelihoods.
Cobre Panamá’s closure is just one example of a larger systemic issue. If the goal is sustainability, why are we relying on the same exploitative practices that fueled the fossil fuel era? The environmental movement cannot afford to ignore the social and ecological costs of mining just because the end product serves a cleaner energy goal.
If we are serious about a just and sustainable energy transition, we must rethink how we source materials. Mining cannot be the default solution when alternative strategies exist. The circular economy model offers a pathway to reduce our dependence on raw extraction.
Recycling metals from e-waste, old batteries, and industrial waste presents a viable option. Current technologies allow for the recovery of materials from discarded electronics, reducing the need for new mining projects. Yet, despite its potential, metal recycling remains underutilized due to economic and logistical barriers. Governments and corporations must invest in scaling up recycling infrastructure and enforcing policies that prioritize material recovery over fresh extraction.
In addition to recycling, ethical sourcing and stricter environmental regulations are crucial. Mining projects must adhere to stronger ecological protections, and companies must be held accountable for their supply chains. Without such measures, greenwashing will continue—allowing businesses to appear environmentally responsible while still engaging in destructive extraction practices.
The renewable energy movement has long been framed as the ultimate solution to our climate crisis, but it is time for a more nuanced conversation. Sustainability is not just about reducing carbon emissions; it must also consider biodiversity, ethical labor practices, and long-term environmental health.
As we move forward, the real challenge is not just how quickly we can transition to renewable energy, but whether we can do so without repeating the mistakes of the past. True sustainability demands that we move beyond the mindset of endless resource consumption, even if it is for a greener cause. The question we must answer is not just how to produce clean energy, but how to ensure that the process of creating it does not come at the cost of the planet itself.
Can we truly call our energy future “clean” if its foundation is built on environmental destruction? Or is it time to redefine what being green really means?
