On February 25, 2025, the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, often referred to as the "doomsday" vault, is set to receive a significant deposit of over 14,000 new seed samples. This facility, located deep within a mountain on the Norwegian Arctic island of Spitsbergen, serves as a global repository for crop diversity, safeguarding duplicates of seeds from gene banks worldwide. Established in 2008, its mission is to protect the genetic material of food crops from potential global catastrophes, including nuclear conflicts and climate change.
The upcoming deposit includes contributions from various countries, notably a collection of 15 species from Sudan. This assortment features multiple varieties of sorghum, a crop integral to Sudan's food security and cultural heritage. The inclusion of these seeds is particularly poignant given the ongoing conflict in Sudan, which erupted in April 2023, resulting in significant loss of life and displacement. The director of Sudan's Agricultural Plant Genetic Resources Conservation and Research Centre emphasized the symbolic importance of these seeds, stating, "In Sudan...these seeds represent hope."
In addition to the Sudanese seeds, the deposit will feature Nordic tree species from Sweden and rice varieties from Thailand. These contributions underscore the vault's role in preserving not only agricultural biodiversity but also the cultural and ecological knowledge associated with these species. Stefan Schmitz, Executive Director of the Crop Trust, highlighted this sentiment, noting that the seeds represent "the knowledge, culture and resilience of the communities that steward them."
The Svalbard Global Seed Vault has been instrumental in restoring agricultural collections affected by crises. Between 2015 and 2019, it played a crucial role in rebuilding seed collections damaged during the Syrian civil war. Such efforts highlight the vault's importance as a global backup for preserving crop diversity against both natural and human-induced disasters.
The facility's strategic location, approximately 1,300 kilometers beyond the Arctic Circle, leverages the region's permafrost to provide natural refrigeration, maintaining seeds at optimal preservation temperatures of around -18 degrees Celsius. This design ensures that even in the event of power failures, the seeds remain viable for extended periods.
Access to the vault is highly restricted to ensure the integrity of its contents. The chambers are opened only a few times annually to limit exposure to external elements. Seeds are stored in custom-made foil packages within sealed boxes, meticulously organized on shelves. This controlled environment minimizes aging and maintains seed viability, ensuring that a diverse array of plant genetic material is preserved for future generations.
