In 2024, global temperatures soared to unprecedented heights, driven by record greenhouse gas concentrations. This escalation intensified the melting of glaciers and sea ice, leading to rising sea levels and bringing the world perilously close to critical warming thresholds, as reported by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) on Wednesday.
The WMO's annual climate report reveals that last year's average global temperature was 1.55 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, surpassing the previous record set in 2023 by 0.1°C. This increase edges closer to the 1.5°C limit established by the 2015 Paris Agreement, which aims to mitigate the most severe impacts of climate change.
While preliminary estimates suggest the long-term average temperature rise is between 1.34°C and 1.41°C, the WMO cautions that a single year exceeding 1.5°C does not constitute a formal breach of the Paris Agreement's threshold. However, this trend underscores the urgency of global climate action.
Several factors contributed to the 2024 temperature surge, including variations in the solar cycle, a significant volcanic eruption, and a reduction in cooling aerosols. These elements, combined with persistent greenhouse gas emissions, have exacerbated global warming.
The year was marked by extreme weather events worldwide. Droughts led to food shortages, while floods and wildfires displaced approximately 800,000 people—the highest number since records began in 2008. Additionally, ocean temperatures reached record highs, accelerating the rate of warming and increasing ocean acidification due to elevated CO₂ concentrations.
The rapid melting of glaciers and sea ice has significantly contributed to sea-level rise. Data indicates that from 2015 to 2024, sea levels rose by an average of 4.7 millimeters annually, compared to 2.1 millimeters per year between 1993 and 2002. This acceleration poses a growing threat to coastal communities and ecosystems.
John Kennedy, the WMO's scientific coordinator and lead author of the report, emphasized the broader implications of polar ice melt. He noted that changes in the Arctic and Antarctic regions could disrupt global ocean circulation patterns, affecting climate systems worldwide. "What happens in the poles doesn't necessarily stay at the poles," Kennedy remarked, highlighting the interconnectedness of Earth's climate systems.
These findings serve as a stark reminder of the escalating environmental challenges posed by climate change. The accelerated ice loss and rising sea levels not only threaten biodiversity but also jeopardize human settlements, particularly in low-lying coastal areas.
